Monuments

The monument to the prominent scientist Aleksander Dunin-Gorkavitch was opened in Khanty-Mansiysk on June 15, 2007.

The monument was put up on the street of the same name. The Governor of Yugra A.Filipenko, the Deputy Chairman of local Government on Issues of Mineral Resources Exploitation and Fuel and Energy Complex V.Karasyov, the Head of the Yugra Forestry Agency E.Platonov, citizens and guests of Khanty-Mansiysk took part in the opening ceremony which was held as one of the events of the 5th International Ecological Festival “To save and Preserve”.

“The monument to Aleksander Dunin-Gorkavitch, scientist and researcher of the northern part of West Siberia, was constructed on the initiative and using the money of the concerned people. It was the result of their sincere and enthusiastic work…”

During the opening ceremony Aleksander Filipenko expressed “the feeling of gratitude to those who initiated the idea of the monument to the person, who can serve as an example to many and many people, promoted and realized it”.

V.Karasyov, who headed the trustee council of this project, pointed to the fact that over three million rubles had been raised for the construction of this monument. Dozens of enterprises and organizations, businessmen of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, and many citizens with the President of the Russian Academy of Science Academician Yuri Osipov among them made their contribution to this project.

According to Vladimir Karasyov, over two million rubles were spent on this monument. And it has been decided by the trustee council to direct the extra money to the creation of historical and ethnographic museum of Aleksander Dunin-Gorkavitch.

The idea of this monument emerged in 2005, when by the initiative of forestry specialists of Yugra the opened competition for the bronze monument design was announced.

The project by Volodya Sargsyan, sculptor from Khanty-Mansiysk, was considered to be the best by the jury. The same time the trustee council was established to raise money and carry out and monitor the monument creation works. In June 2006, the ceremony during which the memorial sign was placed at the projected monument site was held.

In October 2006, the bronze stature of the scientist produced by the Art Casting Company “Lit Art” from Zhukovsky town, Moscow oblast, was delivered to its destination – the Khanty-Mansiysk forestry
